Remembering David Ogden (1924-2026)
David Ogden, former Director of the Vallee Foundation, longtime Boston investment counselor and US Army veteran of the 10th Mountain Division, died peacefully at home in Fernandina Beach, FL, on March 11 at the age of 101.
Born in 1924 in Torquay, England, Mr Ogden spent his early childhood in Europe before moving to the United States in 1939. He attended St Paul’s School and Harvard University, leaving college to serve in World War II and returning to graduate in 1949.
David built a distinguished career in finance, including leadership roles at Massachusetts Financial Services and the investment firm that became part of Wellington Management Company, of which he was later President. Afterwards, he worked independently as an investment counselor and trustee, which is when he became Bert Vallee’s investment advisor. For more than 15 years he played a vital role in the financial growth of the Vallee Foundation. In 2014 he was interviewed for the Foundation’s oral history project.
David was deeply involved in educational and cultural organizations, serving as a trustee of the deCordova Museum, the Children’s Museum of Boston, the Vallee Foundation, and as board chair of the Cambridge School of Weston.
Known for his calm presence, curiosity, and enduring British charm, David enjoyed fishing, theater, and collecting art and antiques. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Judith Ellison Grosvenor, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and extended family.
